#5 Field Hockey Defeats Stockton in Regular Season Finale Shootout

UNION, N.J. (10/30/21) – Jenna Flemings made four stops during an overtime shootout to propel the #5 Kean University field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Stockton University in their regular season finale on Saturday afternoon.

Megan Keeney and Lia DiPiazza scored for the Cougars who improve to 18-1 overall and 5-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Alexandra Palumbo notched two goals for the Ospreys who finish their season at 8-8 overall and 1-5 in the NJAC.

Kean trailed for most of the first half as Stockton opened the scoring with a goal in the six minute. The Cougars evened the contest at 1-1 just before halftime as DiPiazza converted on a penalty stroke.

Kean took the early 2-1 lead in the second half as Keeney scored off a Ja'Carra Jackson pass with a high shot from the top of the arc in the 36th minute.  Stockton answered one more time in regulation with a score just before the end of the third to tie the contest at 2-2.

After a scoreless fourth and two overtime periods, both teams took part in a shootout to decide the contest.

In the shootout, Stockton missed two and Kean missed one before Peyton Mann made the first attempt of the shootout. After Stockton converted on their next attempt, DiPiazza answered with what would be the game-winner. Flemings would stop two more Osprey attempts to lock up the victory.

Kean led on shots (29-14), shots on goal (19-7) and penalty corners (19-13).

Jordan Thompson tallied eight shots, while Keeney recorded seven. Flemings and Belly Reynoso combined for five saves in 80 minutes of work.

Head Coach Leslie LaFronz and the Cougars will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 3rd, hosting the third seed Lions of the College of New Jersey in the NJAC semifinals at 7:30 p.m.
