Newark, N.J. (10/9/21) – The Kean University women's soccer team used an early goal to hold up as they defeated host Rutgers-Newark by the final of 1-0 on Saturday night.
The win improves the Cougars to 4-5-2 overall and 2-2-1 in NJAC action. The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders to 1-3-1 in conference play and 7-3-2 overall.
Jenna Sheedy scored the game-winner just one minute and two seconds into the game. She was able to break free in the box after a feed from Vanessa Leon.
Rutgers-Newark controlled most of the offensive threats the rest of the game with an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks and 12-5 edge in shots.
The Scarlet Raiders threatened late as Maria Miranda, with 1:33 remaining, seemingly found the goal to even it out. Miranda chipped the ball over the keeper only to have it cleared off of the line by Gabi Triolo, preventing the goal. Kean would gather the ball and send it into Rutgers-Newark's defensive half and watched as the clock went to zero.
Rookie Julia Massuci stopped seven shots in the shutout win.
Kean returns to action on Wednesday when they host New Jersey City University at 7:30 p.m.
