Men’s Basketball Extends Winning Streak to Six Games with Victory over Montclair State in NJAC Opener

UNION, N.J. (11/23/21) – Four starters scored in double figures as the Kean University men's basketball team extended its winning streak to six games with a 105-94 victory over Montclair State University in their New Jersey Athletic Conference Opener on Tuesday evening.

Letrell West finished with a season-high 26 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars who improve to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC. Steven Breeman totaled 26 points and eight rebounds for the Red Hawks who fall to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the NJAC.

The Cougars shot the ball extremely well in the first half, posting a 52.5% from the floor. The hot shooting and a 26-11 run allowed Kean to take a 34-15 lead with 7:52 remaining. The Cougars would stretch their lead to 49-25 with 4:15 to play. MSU closed the half on a 19-6 run as Kean maintained a 54-44 lead at intermission.

In the second half, Montclair shaved the lead down to five before Kean used a 21-9 run to push their lead back to nearly 20 at 80-61. The Cougars would extend their lead to the largest of the game at 93-69. The Red Hawks closed the contest on a 25-14 run to get some points back before the final whistle.

Jailen Jamison finished with 17 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Nate Lyles and Kendall Blount both finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Justin Singh-Smith totaled 11 points and nine rebounds, while JD Daniels recorded 11 points and four rebounds.

Head Coach David Turco and the Cougars will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 1st, hosting the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark at 8:00 p.m.
