Union, N.J. (12/1/21) – The Kean University women's basketball team remained perfect in the NJAC with a 72-56 win over visiting Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday night in conference action.
Shannon McCoy led the Cougars (4-4, 2-0 NJAC) with a team-high 27 points while adding 16 rebounds four her fourth double-double of the season.
Samiyah Horton led all players with 36 points for the Scarlet Raiders who fall to 1-1 in the NJAC and 3-3 overall.
It was a slow start for both teams as Rutgers-Newark scratched across a layup almost two minutes into the first quarter followed by Kean's first point a minute and a half later. Tied at four-all, Kean found their rhythm and went on a short 7-0 run to pull ahead 11-4. The Cougars would hold on to the lead for the reminder of the contest, pushing out to their widest margin of the half right before the intermission with two points from McCoy at the charity stripe for a 10 point advantage (35-25).
The Cougars then paced the second half and held on to that double-digit cushion for all but one possession.
Kayla Anderson finished with eight points and 12 rebounds while DarRique Smith provided 15 points, six rebounds and four assists in 30 minutes of action.
The Cougars travel to Rowan University on Saturday for another NJAC matchup.
