Jersey City, N.J. (12/8/21) – The Kean University women's basketball team won the see-saw battle to push past the defending NJAC champions by the final of 65-59 on Wednesday evening.
The win gives the Cougars a 3-1 mark in conference play while the loss drops New Jersey City University to 1-3 this season.
The matchup featured 13 lead changes and nine ties with only one bucket giving a team a momentary double-digit advantage. That basket came with 3:08 left in the contest on a trey from DarRique Smith.
Kean used an 11-3 run in the fourth quarter to finally gain some breathing room late. Tied at 47-all on a layup from Sarah Olivero, the Cougars used two three-pointers from Shannon McCoy and two lay-ins from Aniyah Moore to take an eight point advantage (58-50).
The Gothic Knights got within six with 28 seconds to go, but after three consecutive fouls from NJCU to try and gain possession back, McCoy but the opportunity out of reach, making both of her free throw attempts.
McCoy finished with a game-high 19 points while adding seven rebounds. Rookie Macy Seaman recorded 10 points and six rebounds.
Kean returns to action on Saturday when they host Ramapo College at 3 p.m.
