Montclair, N.J. (2/12/21) – The Red Hawks used a third quarter surge to put the game out of reach as they defeated the Kean University women's basketball team, 67-46, on Friday evening in NJAC action.
Junior Shannon McCoy finished with a team-high 16 points for the Cougars who fall to 0-3 on the season. Julia Sutton provided 14 points in the balanced scoring attack for MSU (3-1, 3-0 NJAC).
The teams traded baskets early and McCoy's layup with 1:22 left to play in the first stanza gave the Cougars what turned out to be their only lead of the contest at 10-9. Olivia Nilsen began the second quarter with a three to tie the game again, however, the Red Hawks went on an 11-0 run over the next five minutes to take control. Montclair took a nine point advantage into the break, 30-21.
MSU then broke the game wide open in the third quarter, outscoring Kean, 24-6, using an 18-0 run.
Kayla Anderson finished with 13 points while DarRique Smith had three steals and four assists off the bench.
The two teams return to action on Saturday when Kean hosts MSU at 1 p.m.
