MSU Pulls Away in Second Half to Push Past Women's Hoops

Union, N.J. (2/13/21) – Senior Casey Filiault registered a double-double 11 points and 10 rebounds but it wasn't enough as Montclair State University swept women's basketball in the season series by the final of 73-62 on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Hawks' (4-1, 4-0 NJAC) Taylor Brown led all players with a double-double 25 points and 13 rebounds.

After trading leads early in the first quarter, the Cougars used a four minute burst to take what would be their largest lead of the day, a nine point advantage, thanks to two buckets from Sarah Olivero and a three-pointer from classmate Shannon McCoy (17-8).

MSU chipped away and regained the lead with 2:23 to go in the second stanza as Brown recorded one of her seven treys of the day to put the Red Hawks up, 34-32.  Kean answered with two baskets down the stretch to take a slim, 36-34 lead into the break.

The third quarter proved to be a see-saw battle that featured two lead changes and three ties.  Brown put MSU up for good with two made free throws and a three-pointer 30 seconds later to close out the frame.

Kean pulled within two on a Brittany Graff layup with just under six minutes to go in the contest, but that would be as close as they would get as the Red Hawks used three more baskets from behind the arc to pull the advantage out to double-digits and what proved to be their largest lead of the day for the final.

Nickie Carter and Kendall Hodges each finished in double digits with 18 and 15 points respectively.

Kean will be back in action when they host the College of New Jersey on Friday, February 20th.
