Union, N.J. (2/19/21) – Senior Shannon Devitt posted a double-double 19 points and 12 rebounds as The College of New Jersey remained unbeaten with a 67-38 victory over the Kean University women's basketball team on Senior Night.
Devitt was 8-for-11 from short range as TCNJ (5-0, 5-0 NJAC) led from a majority of the contest.
Prior to the contest the Cougars honored seniors Casey Filiault, Ashley Hunt and Olivia Nilsen.
Kean got off to a good start, posting a 5-0 lead behind layups and a free throw from junior Shannon McCoy. The lead was short lived, however, and TCNJ used a trey and fastbreak layup from Elle Cimilluca to knot things right up. A three-pointer from Julia Setaro gave the Lions the lead for good with 7:39 to go in the first quarter.
The Cougars battled, holding the deficit to single digits in the first quarter, but TCNJ used a short burst in the second quarter and strong defense to hold Kean to just four points in the 10 minutes. The College of New Jersey went into intermission with a 35-16 advantage.
Despite playing even in the third quarter, the deficit was too large to overcome as Kean fell to 0-5, 0-5 NJAC on the short season.
Fourteen players saw action for the Cougars as McCoy led the team with nine points.
Setaro added 15 points in the win.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow in Ewing, N.J. at 1 p.m.
