Men’s Volleyball Sweeps #9 Rutgers-Newark on Senior Night

UNION, N.J. (3/24/21) – Jake Milnazik and Jared Ray combined for 25 kills as the Kean University men's volleyball team won its fifth straight match with a 3-0 straight sets sweep of #9 Rutgers-Newark in the regular season finale on Senior Night.

Ray finished with 15 kills and posted a .320 hitting percentage as the Cougars finish the regular season at 8-3 overall and 7-1 in the Continental Volleyball Conference.  Andrew Zaleck totaled 12 kills for the Scarlet Raiders who fall to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the CVC.

Ray and Milnazik combined for 10 kills as the Cougars hit .280 in the 25-22 set one victory.  After trading points to start, Newark maintained a five point advantage at 19-14. Kean settled in and used an 11-3 run to rally and capture the opening set. Milnazik and Ray both tallied two kills apiece during the run.

The Cougars dominated the middle set as Kean posted a .500 hitting percentage and held Newark to a negative hitting percentage. The Cougars raced out to a 7-1 lead to start and didn't look back as Ian Capp tallied four of his five aces in the 25-13 set two victory.

The final set was a back and forth affair as Kean held a 21-14 lead and were looking to close it out. Newark chipped away with a 9-3 run to even the match at 23-23. Capp, who was a catalyst all night, was responsible for the final two points as the senior assisted on a Milnazik kill and recorded a block assist with Duncan Beilke.

Capp finished with 18 assists, nine digs, five aces and three kills, while both Maxwell Thompson and Seth Russell totaled four kills apiece. Zach Gerken totaled nine assists and an ace, while Beilke totaled three blocks assists and two digs.

Before the match, Head Coach Charlie Ginex and his staff honored seniors Andrew Lukasiuk, Russell, Jonathan Meyer, Gerken, Milnazik, Steven Zarzycki and Capp for their hard work and dedication to the program over the last four years.

The Cougars will return to action in the CVC tournament, which has yet to be determined by the conference officials. Please check back with Keanathletics.com for more information when it's announced.
