UNION, N.J. (3/27/21) – Maddie Carlson finished 3-for-6 with a homerun, four RBI's and two runs scored over two games as the #8 Kean University softball team remains unbeaten with a doubleheader sweep of Ramapo College in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Kean 8, Ramapo 0 (6 Inn.)
Taryn DiGiacomo improved to 4-0 in the circle and recorded her 42nd career victory in a two-hit shutout of the Roadrunners (0-1) in the opener. DiGiacomo struck out five batters in six innings of work as the senior extended her scoreless streak to 23 innings and moves into third place all-time on the career wins' list passing
Kim Tompkins (1990-92) and
Courtney Smyth (2008-11).
At the plate,
Paige Metz and DiGiacomo both went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while
Jenn Majorczak went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Carlson finished 1-for-3 with two RBI's, while
Gianna Pickens and
Melody Caces both tallied a hit and an RBI.
After collecting a run on a wild pitch in the first, Kean notched three runs on four hits in the second. Pickens and Caces both recorded RBI singles as the Cougars (7-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead. In the third, Carlson blasted the first homerun of her career with a two run shot to center field for the 6-0 advantage.
Kean added two more runs in the sixth with back-to-back RBI doubles by Metz and DiGiacomo that ended the game on a mercy rule.
Kean 9, Ramapo 5
Skylar Hengeveld went 1-for-2 with a grand slam, four RBI's and two runs scored, while Carlson finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored as the Cougars (8-0) battled back from a 5-4 deficit to defeat the Roadrunners (0-2) in the nightcap.
Kean scored four runs over the first four innings, which were highlighted by a two RBI single by Carlson and an RBI single from Majorczak.
Ramapo finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth with five runs on five hits, including three straight RBI's from the top of the order. The Roadrunners took their first lead of the afternoon at 5-4.
Kean responded in the bottom half of the inning as Hengeveld hit a grand slam to left field and the Cougars regained the lead at 8-5. Kean added an insurance run in the same inning with Caces scoring on a wild pitch.
Karly Messina made a relief appearance and improved to 2-0 in the circle with two 2/3 innings of scoreless softball.
