Softball Remains Perfect in NJAC Opener

Union, N.J. (4/6/21) – The Kean University softball team remained perfect in the 2021 season with a  sweep of New Jersey City University by the finals of 10-2 and 8-0 in five inning games on Tuesday afternoon in NJAC action.

Game One – Kean 10, NJCU 2 (5 inn.)

The #8 Cougars put two runs on the board in their half of the first with back-to-back singles from Paige Metz and Taryn DiGiacomo to start the game.  Both would move up two bases each on two separate wild pitches as Metz scored the game's first run.  Later in the frame a sacrifice fly off the bat of Maddie Carlson put the score at 2-0.

Kean added five in the second inning to pull away.  Highlighting the inning was a two RBI single from Metz along with a bases loaded walk from Jenn Majorczak.

NJCU (0-4, 0-4 NJAC) got two back in their half of the third as Katherine Ayala and Emma Herrick each registered an RBI single.

Leading 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars got the two runs they needed for the mercy rule as Metz walked to start the inning.  Majorczak later tripled for an RBI and she came around to score on an errant throw for the final.

Metz was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBI.  DiGiacomo earned her sixth win of the year as she tossed a complete game allowing no earned runs.  She walked one and fanned five.

Game Two – Kean 8, NJCU 0 (5 inn.)

The offense came through in the third inning as Kean used two hits and a groundout to push across three runs.  The Cougars got all the runs they would need in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead.  Maria Bonfanti got the ball rolling as she walked to start the inning.  She moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third before later crossing the plate on groundball by DiGiacomo.  Later in the inning leading 7-0, Carlson pushed across the eighth run with a double down the line.

Heather Clevenger (4-0) tossed a complete game shutout allowing just one single in the fifth inning.  She walked one and struck out five.

Kean returns to action on Saturday when they host The College of New Jersey.
