Porter’s Game-Winner Lifts Men’s Lacrosse to CSAC Championship

GALLOWAY, N.J. (5/8/21) – Anthony Porter scored the game-winning goal with 65 seconds remaining to lift the second seeded Kean University men's lacrosse team to their first Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship with a 14-13 victory over top seeded Stockton University on Saturday afternoon.

Thomas Francy made 13 saves and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player as the Cougars improve to 10-1 overall. Luc Swedlund totaled eight points on eight goals for the Ospreys who finish their season at 7-2 overall.

This is the second conference championship under current Head Coach Shelley Sheiner, who last captured the Skyline Conference Championship in 2008.

Stockton opened the game with a two goal cushion over the first 10 minutes, but Matt Tanis scored with just over three minutes to play and Kean trailed 4-3 at the end of the first.

The second quarter was all Cougars as Kean opened with five unanswered goals to jump in front at 8-4 with 10:22 remaining. Dante Magliano, Tommy Pellegrino, Porter, Connor Batjer, and Danny Bill all notched goals for the Cougars during the run. After a Stockton score, Hunter Jenkinson closed the opening stanza with a goal just over three minutes before halftime.

The third quarter saw goals by George Capria and Magliano help Kean maintain their four goal advantage at 11-7 with 10:53 remaining. The Ospreys closed the quarter with four unanswered goals in the final 5:27 to tie the contest at 11-11 entering the final quarter.

In the fourth, Swedlund scored twice to put the Cougars down one at 13-12 with 3:37 remaining. The final 3:37 saw Porter assist on the game-tying goal to Capria and score the eventual game winner with 1:05 remaining.  

Batjer and Porter both finished with four points on two goals and two assists, while Capria tallied a hat-trick.

On faceoffs, Max Stevens went 20-for-25 with 13 groundballs. On defense, Jenkinson totaled three groundballs and two caused turnovers, Joseph McNulty collected three groundballs. Jonathan Duffy, Tanis and Matt Palmieri all tallied two groundballs and one caused turnover apiece.

The Cougars will now wait for their name to be called during the NCAA.com Selection Show, which will take place tomorrow, Sunday May 9th, at 9:00 p.m.
