Union, N.J. (2/18/22) – Senior Collin Kiernan fanned 12 in six innings of work to propel the Kean University baseball team to their fourth win of the young season by the final of 5-2 over visiting SUNY College at Old Westbury.
Kiernan (1-0) allowed one run and three hits with one walk as he tossed six innings of relief to earn his first win of the year. Daniel Keenan picked up his first save of the season after tossing a scoreless ninth inning.
The Cougars fell into a 1-0 hole in the second as Paulo DePaulis lofted a solo shot to leftfield. An RBI groundout from Michael Medvetz on the bottom of the same inning tied things up and Kean took the lead for good with a four spot in the third. Brett Hilsheimer hit an inside-the-park homerun in the left center gap to bring in two runs and Phil Marcantonio later singled deep in the hole to make it 4-1. The Cougars added one more with Old Westbury miscues.
The Panthers (0-1) scratched across a single run in the fifth with an RBI single from Drew Robertson for what would be the final.
Michael Lapczynski was 2-for-4 with a run scored as eight batters recorded hits on the day for Kean.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday when they host Gwynedd Mercy University at noon.
