Softball Sweeps Drew in Home Opener

Union, N.J. (3/16/22) – The Kean University softball team swept Drew University in their home opener by the finals of 5-3 and 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Game One

The long ball dictated the outcome in the opener as each team homered twice.  The Cougars (11-3) came out on the winning end thanks to Gianna Pickens' three run blast in the third inning, putting Kean on top 5-3.

The Rangers (11-3) took an early 1-0 in the first before both teams' traded single runs in the second.  Drew added to their lead with a solo shot from Molly O'Brien to start the third and the Cougars crept closer with a solo shot of their own in the bottom of the inning from Eliza Filus.  Pickens then capped off the scoring later in the frame for what would be the final.

Pickens was 2-for-3 with four RBI.  In the circle, Annabella Marino (5-2) earned the win in relief as she tossed five innings of shutout ball allowing just one hit, three walks and fanning three.

Game Two

The Cougars paced the offense in the nightcap and scored in the second, third and fourth innings to jump out to a 4-0 advantage.  Pickens, Filus, Gabriella Fredette and Paige Metz all collected single RBI.

Jenn Majorczak led the offense as she was 3-for-3 with a run scored and a double.  Marino collected her second win of the day with the complete game effort.  She (6-2) allowed nine hits and one run.

Kean returns to action next Wednesday when they travel to DeSales University.
