Softball Splits NJAC Opener with TCNJ

EWING, N.J. (4/2/22) – Eliza Filus finished 5-for-8 with four runs scored, three RBI's, two stolen bases and a homerun as the Kean University softball team split a doubleheader with the College of New Jersey in their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.

Filus went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Gabriella Fredette finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Paige Metz went 2-for-4, while Karly Messina, Sarah Zengel and Courtney Sherwood each tallied a hit.

Annabella Marino struck out two batters in a complete game loss.

Kean notched runs in the first, third and fifth innings for a 4-1 advantage entering the bottom of the seventh. Fredette recorded a RBI single in the first, while Zengel notched a two RBI double in the third. The Lions rallied with four runs on five hits, including two errors for a walk-off victory in the seventh.

Filus finished 2-for-4 with three RBI's and a run scored, while Metz, Jenn Majorczak, and Messina each recorded a hit.

Heather Clevenger struck out three batters in the complete game victory.

After each scoring a run, the Cougars and Lions were deadlocked at 1-1 entering extra innings. In the eighth, Filus smacked her fifth homerun of the season with a three-run bomb to left field that put Kean in front at 4-1.

TCNJ scored twice in the bottom half of the inning and threated with the winning run at the plate, but a fly out and groundout ended the game for the Lions.

Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 5th, hosting the Red Hawks of Montclair State University for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
