Softball Sweeps Doubleheader with William Paterson

WAYNE, N.J. (4/27/22) – Karly Messina went 5-for-9 with eight RBIs, one run scored and one double over two games as the Kean University softball team swept a doubleheader with William Paterson University on Wednesday afternoon.

Messina finished 3-for-5 with a career high five RBIs, while Jenn Majorczak went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Eliza Filus and Gabriella Fredette each notched two hits apiece in the 10 run victory.

Heather Clevenger allowed just one hit and one run with four strikeouts in the complete game victory.

The game remained scoreless into the fifth, when Filus and Messina helped the Cougars put two runs on the scoreboard with back-to-back RBIs. After Paterson scored in the bottom half of the fifth, Kean added three more runs in the sixth with RBIs from Majorczak, Fredette and Messina.

The Cougars hot bats continued into the seventh when Majorczak and Messina combined for five runs and five RBIs on two hits.

Filus finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored, while Majorczak, Isabella Polash and Melody Caces all recorded three hits apiece. Messina went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Sarah Zengel finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Annabella Marino struck out one batter in the complete game victory.

Kean held an early 2-1 lead in the second after Majorczak scored on the throw in the first and Caces drove in a run in the second. The Cougars broke the game open in the third and fourth innings with seven runs on 10 hits. Messina recorded three RBIs, while Polash and Zengel each recorded two RBIs as Kean pushed their lead to 9-2 entering the fifth.

Paige Metz added to the run total in the seventh with a three-run homer to center.  

Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action in Camden, N.J. on Saturday, Apr. 30th, against the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden for a regular season finale doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
