Softball Secures Second Seed in NJAC Tournament with Sweep of Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. (4/30/22) – Paige Metz finished 3-for-6 with five RBIs, two runs scored, and two doubles over two games as the Kean University softball team secured the second seed in the upcoming New Jersey Athletic Conference Softball Tournament with a sweep of Rutgers-Camden in their regular season finale on Saturday afternoon.

Metz went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and one run scored, while Eliza Filus finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Gabriella Fredette, Gianna Pickens and Melody Caces each recorded a hit apiece.

Heather Clevenger struck out three batters in the complete game victory.
The Cougars notched eight runs on seven hits with four runs in the second and four in the sixth.

Caces, Metz and Jenn Majorczak all recorded RBIs during the four run second inning. Metz and Majorczak each added another RBI in the sixth along with Filus and Fredette driving in runs during another four run inning.  

Kean 7, Rutgers-Camden 3
Fredette went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Caces finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Metz and Karly Messina each recorded a hit with two RBIs apiece.

Annabella Marino earned the decision in the circle, while Clevenger notched a save.

A sacrifice fly RBI on both sides allowed one run across in the first. Kean opened things up with a combined six runs over the next three innings for a 7-1 advantage entering the fifth. Metz knocked in two runs with an RBI ground rule double in the second, Isabella Polash recorded an RBI sacrifice fly in the third and both Fredette and Messina collected RBI hits in the fourth.

Camden notched two runs in the sixth and threatened in the seventh with a leadoff walk and a double. Clevenger made a rare save appearance and ended the game in quick order.

Head Coach Margie Acker and the second seed Cougars will return to action on Tuesday, May 3rd, hosting the fifth seed Ospreys of Stockton University in the opening round of the NJAC Softball Tournament at 4:00 p.m.
