Union, N.J. (4/9/22) – The Kean University baseball team split with William Paterson University by winning the opener, 13-2 and falling in the nightcap, 4-3.
Game One
The Pioneers (15-9, 2-3 NJAC) jumped out on top with a single run in the first off an RBI single from Steve Yellin. The lead was short lived, as the Cougars (22-6, 5-1 NJAC) scored three in the second and three more in the fourth. Kean recorded RBI singles from Caleb Rodriguez (twice), Brett Hilsheimer and Philip Mahlik. Timothy Huxen registered an RBI double and Michael Medvetz added a sac fly.
After trading single runs in the sixth and seventh, the Cougars put the game away in the bottom of the seventh with a six spot. Josh Jackson hit his second homerun of the week, a two run shot, while Kyle Adorno drove in two with a single. Mahlik added an RBI triple and Michael Lapczynski closed out the scoring with an RBI single.
Collin Kiernan improved to 7-0 on the year as he tossed another complete game, allowing two runs, two walks and seven hits. He struck out five.
Adorno, Mahlik and Jackson all finished with three hits while Rodriguez had a perfect 4-for-4 opener.
Game Two
The Cougars struck first in the nightcap with three runs in the bottom of the second. Rodriguez collected an RBI single and Hilsheimer later followed with a two RBI single up the middle.
Elliott Hayward lofted a solo shot in the fifth get on the board for the Pioneers and William Paterson took the lead for good one inning later. Vinnie Martin doubled down the line to close the gap to one and Jake Lutz recorded the go-ahead run with a two RBI single to right centerfield.
Starter Riley Weis (3-1) allowed three runs in six innings with six hits, three walks and six strikeouts to earn the win while reliever Neel Telidevara recorded the save with a three inning shutout performance. He allowed no hits, walked one and fanned one.
Kean returns to action on Thursday when they host Ramapo College at 3:30 p.m.
