Softball Splits Second Day of Fastpitch Dreams Classic


NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (3/7/23) – Melody Caces went 6-for-9 with four runs scored, three stolen bases, one RBI and one double over two games as the Kean University softball team split the second day of the Fastpitch Dreams Classic in South Carolina.

Widener 9 (2-1), Kean 6 (5-4)
  • Kean jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind a Gianna Pickens RBI double, a Sydney Hixenbaugh RBI sacrifice fly and an Andee Perseponko inside the park homerun.
  • Widener capitalized on four Cougar defensive errors to take their first lead of the contest at 4-3.
  • Eliza Filus evened the game in the fifth with an RBI single through the left side.
  • The Pride extended their lead to 8-4 in the bottom half with four runs on two hits and three errors.
  • Kean would collect two more runs in the sixth and seventh when Karly Messina scored on an error and Autaum Hilyer recorded an RBI groundout.
  • Caces went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
  • Pickens finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Filus went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Hixenbaugh and Olivia Quercia combined for three strikeouts.
  • Leah DiGiandomenico finished 2-for-3 with three RBI's and two runs scored for the Pride.
Kean 7 (6-4), King's Pa. 4 (2-3)
  • The Monarchs jumped out to a 4-1 lead after tallying two runs in the first and two in the fifth.
  • Hilyer tallied the Cougars first run of the contest with an RBI groundout in the fifth.
  • Kean rallied in the sixth and seventh with six runs on four hits and three errors to push their lead to 7-4.
  • In the sixth, Perseponko and Emily Zuppa scored on wild pitches, while Brianna Sciulli scored on a throwing error and Hilyer smacked an RBI single up the middle for a 5-4 advantage.
  • In the seventh, back-to-back errors allowed Zuppa to score and Caces hit an RBI single that drove in Sciulli.
  • Caces went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Filus finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Zuppa finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
  • Annabella Marino struck out six batters in the complete game victory.
  • Kiersten Krouse finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Monarchs.    
Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action tomorrow in the North Myrtle Beach Fastpitch Dreams Classic against Gettysburg at 3:00 pm and Hunter at 7:00 p.m.
