Union, N.J. (4/18/23) – The Kean University softball team split their doubleheader with New Jersey City University on Tuesday afternoon.
Game One – NJCU 1, Kean 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Gothic Knights (11-16, 2-9 NJAC) scored the game's only run in the top of the third. Natalie Rosales started off the inning reaching on a Cougar miscue. She would come around to score on a double from Emily Tunney two batters later.
The Cougars (19-12, 4-7 NJAC) struggled to get on base in the opener as Sidnie Dabbadie recorded 12 strikeouts in the contest.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Kean was only able to record three hits, one of which was a two out triple from Melody Caces in the third inning.
Dabbadie (8-5) allowed no walks in addition to her 12 strikeouts in the game to earn the win.
Sydney Hixenbaugh (6-4) suffered the loss for Kean despite allowing no earned runs and just two hits. She walked one and struck out six.
Game Two – Kean 7, NJCU 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Kean (20-12, 5-7 NJAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning with three RBI singles as well as an RBI fielder's choice.
The Cougars added one more in the second as Gianna Pickens scored on a wild pitch.
The team's traded single runs in the fourth before Kean scored the final run of the day in the fifth. Hixenbaugh crossed the plate on a wild pitch after reaching on a leadoff single.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Rookie Abby Burns picked up her fourth win of the season as she tossed a complete game allowing just one run on five hits. She struck out three and walked no one.
Offensively Eliza Filus, Emily Zuppa and Caces each had two hits while Zuppa recording a double and Filus a triple. Caces and Filus also each had two stolen bases.
