Union, N.J. (4/25/23) – The Kean University softball team picked up a much needed sweep of William Paterson University on Tuesday afternoon in NJAC action.
Game One – Kean 3, WP 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Pioneers (20-13-1, 5-10-1 NJAC) scored the game's first run in the top of the third as Carly McDaniel singled with two outs, driving in Jasmine Vera who reached on a single of her own earlier in the inning.
Kean (22-14, 7-9 NJAC) answered right back in the same inning, plating two to take the lead. Eliza Filus singled with one out and swiped second to get into scoring position. She later scored on an error that allowed Gianna Pickens to reach first. Pickens would later score in the inning on another miscue.
The Cougars added insurance in the fifth as Sydney Hixenbaugh lofted a solo homerun off the Field House.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Annabella Marino picked up the win in the relief effort. Marino (7-6) faced the minimum in four innings of work striking out three.
Offensively Filus and Hixenbaugh each had two hits.
Game Two – Kean 1, WP 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Kean scored the game's only run in the bottom of the third as Brianna Sciulli reached on a full count walk. She moved to second on an infield single from Filus. With two outs, both moved up in a wild pitch. Hixenbaugh walked to load the bases and Karly Messina reached on an error, sending Sciulli across the plate for what would be the only run of the nightcap.

Offensively Filus was 2-for-3.
