Union, N.J. (10/25/24) – The Kean University women's volleyball team split in Friday action, defeating Grinnell College and falling to Stevens Institute of Technology.
Kean 3, Grinnell 0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-22)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Cougars (15-10) used a late push to widen their advantage and take set one. Kean scored eight of the last 10 points in the frame.
Kean led for most of the second set but a late rally from Grinnell (17-7) tied the set up at 23-all. Julia Vacca then registered two straight kills to give KU a 2-0 lead.
Tied at 16-all in the third set the Cougars used three kills and an ace to take the lead for good. The Pioneers pulled within two on multiple occasions, but Kean put away the win with a kill from Cayley Elena Morrison.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Morrison and Taylor Micheaux led the match with 11 kills each.
Olivia Capra added 10 kills and seven digs while Madeline Dohogne provided 15 digs and four aces.
Stevens 3, Kean 2 (25-21, 25-18, 17-25, 19-25, 8-15)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Kean trailed early in the first set but used a 6-0 run midway through take the lead for good.
The Cougars sprinted to a large lead in the second set, turning a three-all tie into a 16-5 advantage. Stevens chipped away and pulled within four, 21-17. Kean scored four of the next five points to take a 2-0 lead.
Kean cruised to start the third set, scoring the first six points. After an early timeout, Stevens settled down and tied things up at eight-all. The Ducks then went on their own run and took a lead they would not relinquish to force a fourth set.
Leading by one, 10-9, Stevens found a groove and went on a 7-0 run to again force another set, this time the deciding fifth set.
After early see-saw action, the Ducks used a 5-0 run to pull away for the comeback win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Micheaux recorded a match-high and career-high 21 kills. Dohogne registered 23 digs and Aspen O'Brien collected 41 assists. During the match, O'Brien became the sixth player in program history to reach the 2,000 career assist mark.
