Union, N.J. (3/4/24) – Eliza Filus was a combined 7-for-7 with six RBI and six runs scored to lead the Kean University softball team to a sweep of visiting FDU-Florham by the finals of 16-1 and 14-3, both in shortened run-rule five inning contests.
Game One (Kean 16, FDU 1)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Kean (3-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first with three hits and an error.
The Devils (0-2) erased the shutout in the top of the second, scoring without the aid of a hit. Abigail Rodriguez reach via a hit batter and later came around to score via an error.
Filus made it 5-1 in the bottom of the same inning with a two run homer to left.
The Cougars then blew the game wide open with nine runs in the third frame. Highlighting the inning was a grand slam from Bella Truelove.
FDU broke up the no-hitter with one out in the top of the fifth as Kacie Centineo tripled down the rightfield line.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
FIlus was 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored, falling a triple short of the cycle. Maya Thompson and Melody Caces each collected three hits.
In the circle, Nikki Lusnia picked up her second win of the season tossing five innings allowing just that one hit and no earned runs. She fanned five.
Game Two (Kean 14, FDU 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Devils were the first to strike in the nightcap, scoring all their runs in the first inning. Centineo drove in the game's first run with a single in the gap while an error on the play allowed a second run to score for a quick 2-0 lead. Centineo scored on a Jada Lambright single.
The Cougars settled down and took the lead right back with four runs in the bottom of the same inning, aided by three FDU errors.
Kean added two in the second as Thompson registered an RBI groundout and Filus scored on a throwing error.
The Cougars put the game out of reach in the fourth with eight runs on seven hits. Highlighting the inning was a bases loaded single from Isabella Polash and a two RBI single from Lauren Paulk. Filus collected two RBI in the inning with a single RBI in each of her two at bats.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Karly Messina earned the win in the circle. She allowed two earned runs and five hits in five innings of work.
Caces and Filus each scored three times in the top of the order.

Kean hops a flight down south and will resume games on Saturday.
