Port Charlotte, Fla. (3/8/24) – The Kean University baseball team suffered a 10-7 defeat to Heidelberg University in the nightcap of their first day at the Snowbird Baseball Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Heidelberg jumped out on top with three runs in the bottom of the first off five straight hits. 

The Cougars pulled within one in the top of the third as Dominic Masino walked to start the inning, followed by a double from J.T. Abrusci, putting both runners in scoring position.  Kyle Adorno drove in one with an RBI single and Abrusci later scored on a double play.

Leading 4-2 heading into the fifth thanks to an Adam McVicker solo homer in the third, the Student Princes then widened the gap with four runs on two hits, highlighted by a two RBI homer from Andrew Cook.

Trailing 10-2 in the eighth, the Cougars mounted a comeback, plating four runs.  Gianni Marano and Phil Marcantonio provided back-to-back doubles with Marano driving in one and Marcantonio two.  John Chiusano rounded out the rally with an RBI single.

Kean added one more in the ninth as Dan Reistle scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a walk.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Abrusci was 2-for-3 while Marcantonio recorded two RBI.

Cole McGourty tossed two and two thirds innings of no-hit, shutout relief.  He walked no one and struck out four.
