Camden, N.J. (4/13/24) – The Kean University softball team split in NJAC action on Saturday afternoon at Rutgers-Camden.
Game One – Rutgers-Camden 1, Kean 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The opener was a traditional pitchers' duel with only one unearned run in the contest. That run came in the bottom of the fourth inning as pinch-hitter Alana Gannon lofted a sac fly, scoring Luci Hutchinson for the Scarlet Raptors.
The Cougars (18-11, 6-4 NJAC) broke up the no-hitter with one out in the seventh inning. Maya Thompson doubled and advanced to third on a throwing miscue.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Sammie Friel (7-4) earned the win after tossing a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit along the way. She fanned seven and walked two.
Game Two – Kean 10, Rutgers-Camden 4
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Tied at three-all after the third, the Cougars took the lead for good with three more in the fourth inning. Eliza Filus and Thompson each collected RBI singles in the inning.
Kean expanded their lead to 9-3 in the fifth as Karly Messina doubled home two and Thompson traded places with her with an RBI double.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Four different Cougars collected two RBI in the nightcap with Thompson registering a 3-for-5 performance. Filus finished with three runs scored in addition to her two RBI.
Olivia Quercia (4-0) earned the win in relief. She allowed five hits and no earned runs in four and a third innings of work.
