Softball Takes Two at William Paterson

Wayne, N.J. (4/16/24) – The Kean University softball team swept host William Paterson University on Tuesday afternoon in NJAC action.

Game One – Kean 14, William Paterson 2 (5 innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Cougars (20-11, 8-4 NJAC) pushed out to a 6-0 lead after four innings in the opener.  Eliza Filus highlighted the scoring with a bases clearing triple in the fourth.

Kean then exploded for eight runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.  Filus connected on a two RBI double, Karly Messina recorded a two RBI single and Nikki Lusnia added a two RBI single of her own.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Filus added three runs scored and finished with five RBI.  Teammate Maya Thompson was a perfect 4-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored.

Lusnia (8-8) earned the win in the complete game effort.  She allowed six hits.  She walked no one and struck out eight.

Game Two – Kean 6, William Paterson 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

In a much closer matchup in the nightcap Lauren Paulk got the Cougars on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI single.

The Pioneers took the lead in the same inning with an RBI double and RBI single.

Filus tied the game back up at two-all with an RBI triple in the top of the fifth and came around to score on a wild pitch for the go-ahead run.  Paulk added insurance with a first pitch, three-run homer in the sixth inning.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Rookie Anabella Farinha (6-2) earned the win in relief.  She allowed just three hits and one walk in three and two thirds innings of work.

Paulk was 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored.

Kean hosts Centenary College on Wednesday afternoon.
