Union, N.J. (4/17/24) – The Kean University softball team picked up a sweep of visiting Centenary University on Wednesday in non-conference action.
Game One – Kean 2, Centenary 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Kean (22-11) scratched across a single run in the first as Eliza Filus reached first on a wild pitch after striking out. She stole second and advanced to third on a single from Karly Messina. Maya Thompson drove her home with a single of her own.
The score would remain that way as both teams battled in a pitchers' duel until the fifth inning. Brianna Sciulli worked a full count walk and quickly stole second. Filus then lofted a single to center to put Kean ahead, 2-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Nikki Lusnia (9-8) earned the win after tossing the complete game shutout. She allowed six hits, five singles and no walks while striking out six.
Jaelynn Miller (13-1) suffered her first loss of the season despite striking out 12 Cougars. She allowed both runs and seven hits while walking two.
Offensively Thompson was 3-for-3 for Kean.
Game Two – Kean 8, Centenary 0 (5 innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Cougars used a balanced scoring attack to run-rule the Cyclones (18-7) in the nightcap.
Kean pushed across two in the first with RBI singles from Filus and Messina. It was Filus again in the second, this time with a two RBI double for a 4-0 advantage.
Sciulli made it 5-0 with an RBI single in the third and Filus connected on a solo blast to give Kean a 6-0 lead.
Kean ended the game in the fifth as Messina walked with the bases loaded and Melody Caces later came around to score on a wild pitch.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Filus was 4-for-4 with four RBI (a triple shy of the cycle).
In the circle Anabella Farinha improved to 7-2 with the complete game shutout. She allowed just two singles and three walks and struck out one.
