Softball Sweeps Stockton

Union, N.J. (4/23/24) – The Kean University softball team picked up their seventh straight win by defeating Stockton University in a twinbill on Tuesday afternoon.

Game One – Kean 6, Stockton 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Maya Thompson put the Cougars on top in the first with a two run blast to right. 

Kean (26-11, 12-4 NJAC) added three more in the fourth, highlighted by a two RBI single from Thompson.

Eliza Filus closed out the scoring in the fifth with an RBI infield single.  That RBI gives her 125 for her career at Kean, a new standard.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Nikki Lusnia spun a one-hitter as the Ospreys (20-12, 11-5 NJAC) broke up the no-hitter in the sixth inning.  She walked two and fanned eight.

Thompson finished with three hits and four RBI while Melody Caces collected three hits of her own, including a double.

Game Two – Kean 6, Stockton 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The nightcap started similarly for the Cougars as this time it was Karly Messina with a two run shot to get things going in the first.

Filus made it 4-0 in the second with an inside the park homerun, breaking the career mark for homeruns at Kean University.

Emily Spencer erased the shutout in the third inning with a solo homer to rightcenter.

The Cougars added two more, one in the third and another in the sixth, added by Osprey miscues.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Lusnia earned the win in the nightcap, coming in in relief with four shutout innings.  She allowed three hits and struck out six.

With the wins, Kean now stands along in third place in the NJAC standings, with two games remaining in the regular season.

UP NEXT:

Kean will head to Ramapo College on Saturday afternoon.
