Jersey City, N.J. (4/7/24) – The Kean University softball team swept New Jersey City University on Sunday in a rescheduled matchup by the finals of 11-0 and 9-0.
Game One – Kean 11, NJCU 0 (6 innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Pitcher Nikki Lusnia tossed the eighth no-hitter in program history in the opener. Lusnia threw six innings allowing just two walks while striking out nine.
The Cougars (15-10, 3-3 NJAC) broke through with two runs in the top of the first as Karly Messina connected on an RBI double and later scored on an error.
After scoring a single run in the fourth on an error, Kean added two more in the fifth with a two RBI triple off the bat of Andee Perseponko.
The Cougars put the game out of reach in the sixth with six more runs. Highlighting the inning was a two RBI single from Perseponko and a two RBI single from Bella Truelove.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Perseponko was 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored while Messina was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Game Two – Kean 9, NJCU 0 (5 innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Cougars started off game two with four runs in the first, aided by three NJCU miscues.
Maya Thompson made it 7-0 with a three run homer in the second frame.
Kean used the longball again in the fifth as Truelove connected for a two run blast for what would be the final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Rookie Anabella Farinha (5-2) tossed the complete game shutout allowing just four hits and one walk. She struck out four.
Offensively Thompson was 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored.
