Softball Takes Two Against Rutgers-Newark

Union, N.J. (4/9/24) – The Kean University softball team swept visiting Rutgers-Newark by the final of 19-0 (five innings) and 5-2.

Game One – Kean 19, Rutgers-Newark 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Kean dominated right from the beginning, scoring 10 runs in the first frame.

Maya Thompson, Bella Truelove and Elisa Filus all recorded two RBI hits in the inning.

The Cougars (17-10, 5-3 NJAC) extended their lead to 12-0 in the second as Brianna Sciulli lined a two RBI single.

Kean widened the gap even more in the third with seven more runs.  Highlighting the inning was a bases clearing double from Thompson.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Thompson was 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored while Truelove was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two doubles.

Sciulli was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI and teammate Andee Perseponko was 4-for-4 with two runs scored.

In the circle, Nikki Lusnia improved to 7-7 allowing just two runs and one walk while fanning four.

Game Two – Kean 5, Rutgers-Newark 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The nightcap proved to be much closer.  Kean again jumped out on top with two runs in the first inning.  The Cougars received an RBI groundout from Karly Messina and Thompson registered an RBI while reaching on an error.

Kean made it 5-0 after the second when Filus drove in two with a triple and later scored on an RBI groundout from Messina.

The Scarlet Raiders (5-17, 3-5 NJAC) scored their first run of the day in the top of the third and rounded out the scoring for the day with a single run in the top of the fifth off a solo homer off the scoreboard from Kayla Cardozo, her first of the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Melody Caces and Filus each finished with two hits for Kean as each team only managed seven hits in the nightcap.

Olivia Quercia improved to 3-0 with three innings of relief.  She allowed one run and two hits.  Lusnia collected the save tossing the seventh inning allowing just a walk.

Kean travels to Arcadia University on Thursday.
