Virginia Beach, Va. (8/30/24) – The Kean University women's volleyball team opened with a split at the Marlin Invitational held at Virginia Wesleyan University on Friday evening.
Kean 3, Geneva 0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-17)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Cougars used a 10-0 run in the first set to breeze to an opening set win.
Tied at 11-all in the second stanza, Kean mounted a 7-0 spurt to give themselves a cushion.
Leading by just one late in the final set, the Cougars scored the match's final seven points to walk away with the straight set win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Bella Stem led all players with 13 kills while Cayley Elena Morrison chipped in with eight.
Aspen O'Brien collected 37 assists along with a match-high five service aces.
Annabelle Valencia ended the opener with 18 digs.
#22 Mary Washington 3, Kean 1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-27, 16-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Tied at 21-all in the opening set, Mary Washington recorded four of the next five points to push ahead with the set one win.
The Cougars jumped out to early lead in the second set with a seven point run and held on to knot the match at one-all.
It was a see-saw battle in set three before Mary Washington powered through with three straight points on two kills and a Cougar attack error.
The Eagles pushed out to an early 11-2 lead in what would be the final set on their way to the four set win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Morrison led all players with 18 kills along with a .577 hitting percentage. She added three blocks, including two solo stops.
Aubre Adams provided eight kills and four blocks (three solo) while O'Brien registered 39 assists and 14 digs.
