Union, N.J. (9/14/24) – The Kean University football team fell short in their home opener, falling by the final of 31-17.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Bears (2-0) scored on their first drive after receiving the opening kickoff. Tony Holden capped off the 85 yard, 11 play drive with a 10-yard rush for the game's first points.
Kean (0-2) got on the board late in the first quarter after a 20-yard punt return from Christian Bujno and a personal foul penalty set up the Cougars 30 yards outside of the endzone. The drive looked to be stalled, but George Chrissafis knocked in a 48-yard field goal (7-3).
Ursinus broke the game open with three touchdowns in second quarter. Highlighting the action was a 55-yard interception return from Ryan Divergilis, putting the Bears inside the redzone as well as a 69-yard punt return touchdown from Cameron Dennis.
The Cougars scored a touchdown just before intermission as Rocco Pellegrini found Sal Marchione for a five-yard strike.
Ursinus scored on their first possession of the second half with a 20-yard field goal from Jordan Carr.
Kean scored what would be the game's final points later in the third quarter after three big receptions from Marchione (18 yards), Aly Marzouk (29 yards) and Bujno (32 yards). Bujno capped off the drive with an eight-yard reception for what would be the final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Bujno finished with 84 receptions yards as well as 21 punt return yards.
Pellegrini was 25-for-43 for 256 yards and two touchdowns.
For the Bears, Holden ended the afternoon with 104 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Dennis added 217 yards on special teams with seven punt returns and three kickoff returns.
Defensively for Kean, Tanner Ash had two interceptions for a total of 23 yards. He added seven tackles.
For Ursinus, Aaron Rios led the way with five sacks and seven tackles for a loss.
