Late Rally Sends Women's Basketball to NJAC Victory

Union, N.J. (1/11/25) – The Kean University women's basketball team used a late rally to push past Rutgers-Camden, 73-61, Saturday afternoon in NJAC action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Scarlet Raptors (6-8, 2-5 NJAC) jumped out of the gate to an early 8-0 lead and held that lead for the first 20 minutes.

Kean (6-8, 3-4 NJAC) chipped away from a 12-point deficit (end of the first quarter) and pulled within two at the break (34-32).

After keeping the game close in the third quarter, the Cougars finally saw their first lead of the day as Brittany Graff hit two from the charity stripe with 0.1 seconds on the clock.

Rutgers-Camden tied things up once more with the first bucket of the final period, but the Cougars were able to turn things around as Erika Mercedes recorded 12 fourth quarter points to push Kean to the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Maya Edwards led all players with 23 points in the complete game effort.  Mercedes finished with 15 points, four assists, seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals.

Maddison Vaughn finished the day with 11 points and six rebounds while Graff rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points, five assists and six steals.

Eleven players saw action for the Cougars as Peyton Smith chipped in with six points and eight rebounds while playing 21 minutes off the bench.

Courtney Edmundo and Rahzirah Blocker both finished with double-doubles for Rutgers-Camden with 18 and 10 points and 17 and 12 rebounds, respectively.
