Newark, N.J. (4/10/25) – The Kean University softball team swept host Rutgers-Newark in a rescheduled doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.
Game One – Kean 16, Rutgers-Newark 8 (5 innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Cougars used balanced scoring in the first four innings but opened the gates in the fifth, pouring in nine runs to push out to a 16-2 lead. Highlighting the frame was a two RBI double from Andee Perseponko and a bases-clearing double from Bella Truelove.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Nikki Lusnia helped herself at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with two RBI. Rookie Gina Mahlik was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI while Maya Thompson was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBI and a triple.
In the circle, Lusnia recorded the win, tossing four and a third innings.
Game Two – Kean 6, Rutgers-Newark 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Kean held a slight advantage (1-0) into the sixth before adding insurance with a three spot in the sixth and another two in the seventh.
Highlighting the offense was a Mahlik inside the park homer.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Despite scoring six runs, the Cougars were only able to record six hits, scattered among the starters. Kiley Allen had two RBI, along with a triple.
Olivia Quercia earned the win after tossing the shutout. She allowed just six hits.
