Union, N.J. (4/19/25) – The Kean University baseball team clinched the NJAC regular season crown with a sweep of The College of New Jersey, 4-2 & 7-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Game One – Kean 4, TCNJ 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
It was a tight pitching matchup, with Kean's Jason Gilman striking out nine through the first four innings. The Cougars (30-5, 14-0 NJAC) chipped away with singles but weren't able to push through until the fourth inning. Brett Hilsheimer singled to start the frame and John Chiusano followed with a monster homer to left, the first of his career, for a 2-0 lead.
Kean doubled their advantage in the fifth as Dan Reistle reached on a hit-batsman and after swiping second, scoring on a single from Chiusano. Chiusano followed suit and stole second and scored on a single, this time by Dominic Masino.
The Lions (20-14, 8-6 NJAC) cut the deficit in half in the sixth as Ryan Goodall found the hole for two RBI.
Jason Basilicata (7) nailed down the save with two innings of scoreless, hitless relief.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Gilman improved to 10-0 on the season, tying a program record in the process. He struck out 12 and allowed five hits.
Offensively Hilsheimer, Chiusano and Masino all had three hits.
Game Two – Kean 7, TCNJ 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The nightcap turned into a see-saw battle as the Lions scratched across a single run on a sac fly to start the contest. Kean responded in the second with two runs thanks to an RBI double from Masino and an RBI single from Nick Sellari.
TCNJ tied it up in the third as Gianni Marano singled in the hole.
The Lions went ahead, 3-2, in the fourth as Andrew Fernandez recorded a solo homer to left.
Kean responded and took the lead back for good with a four spot in the fifth. Tyler Stone drove in two with a double and CJ Tomalavage followed with an RBI single. Masino closed out the scoring in the inning with an RBI fielder's choice.
Adam Scire added insurance in the eighth with a sac fly.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Christian Pareja (3-0) earned the win after tossing five innings, allowing seven hits and three runs. Lucas White notched a save with a scoreless, four inning relief appearance. He allowed four hits.
Offensively Chiusano was 4-for-4.
Of note, Kyle Adorno became the new Kean career record holder of runs scored, now with 158.
