Baseball Sweeps Rutgers-Newark

Newark & Union, N.J. (4/27/25) – The Kean University baseball team swept Rutgers-Newark to close out the regular season on Sunday.

In a strange twist the Cougars (34-6, 17-1) started the day in Newark, but finished game two in Union after field issues arose at Weequahic Park.

Both records are firsts for the program as Kean finishes with the best overall record in the regular season in their history while posting a program best 17-1 record in conference play.

Game One – Kean 10, Rutgers-Newark 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Cougars scored in all but three innings, plating runs in the first six frames.

Kean got started with two in the first from an RBI single by Tyler Stone and a solo homer from CJ Tomalavage, his 11th of the season.

After adding a single run in the second, John Chiusano connected on his second homerun of the season, a two run shot, in the third to go ahead, 5-0.

Nick Sellari added to the Kean lead in the fifth with a two RBI single and Chiusano and Brett Hilsheimer closed out the scoring for Kean with RBI singles in the sixth.

Rutgers-Newark erased the shutout in the eighth with an RBI single.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Christian Pareja (4-0) earned the win for Kean after tossing seven scoreless innings.  He fanned a season-best 11 and allowed just two hits.

Offensively Chiusano and Sellari each had three RBI.

Game Two – Kean 15, Rutgers-Newark 5

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Kean plated a single run in the top of the first as Tomalavage connected on an RBI double.

While in the bottom of the first with runners on second and third, a mound issue arose and forced the game to Jim Hynes Stadium to be concluded.

After the delay, the Scarlet Raiders lofted a sac fly to knot the game at one-all in the first.

Kean regained the lead in their next at-bat as Dominic Masino registered an RBI groundout.

Later in the contest the Cougars used the long ball to push out to a cushion.  Leading 7-3 in the fifth, Kyle Adorno found the gap with a three-run homer. It was Chiusano's turn again in the sixth as he recorded a two run shot, his second of the day.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Sellari was the only Cougar with multiple hits (2) while Chiusano and Adorno each finished with three RBI.

Connor Ramsey (4-1) earned the win after throwing five innings.
