Football Rallies Past Morrisville

Union, N.J. (9/6/25) – Rookie Anthony Lopez connected on a 26-yard field goal with time expiring to give the Kean University football team a 17-14 win in their season opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

SUNY Morrisville was first to strike late in the first quarter using a long 15 play, 75-yard drive, capped by a one-yard plunge from Isaac Sylvain.

Kean tied things up at seven-all near the end of the second quarter, outracing both the impending storm and the Mustangs.  Christian Bujno caught three straight passes for a combined 32 yards to push into the redzone.  Rakeem Ross sealed the drive with a six-yard catch in the back of the endzone to tie the game at seven-all.

From there the storm caught up to Alumni Stadium, forcing a two-hour delay.

Zavion Daniels helped set up his offense with a 25 yard interception, compounded with a 10 yard penalty, putting the Mustangs into Kean territory early in the third quarter.  Sylvain recorded 33 rushing yards in two plays to put Morrisville back on top, 14-7.

Special teams tied things up for Kean as Bujno eluded tackles and found running room on his way to a 60-yard punt return late in the third quarter.

Starting at their own 12-yard line with just over five minutes left in the contest the Cougars used a 14 play, 79-yard drive to set up Lopez with three seconds left in regulation.  On the first field goal attempt of his collegiate career, he nailed a 26-yarder as time expired to give Kean their first season opening win since 2015.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Rocco Pellegrini and Dario Bryant combined for 24 pass completions for 182 yards.  Justin Leigh led the receiving corps with nine catches for 67 yards.

On defense, Tre Allen recorded four pass breakups and an interception along three tackles while Rodney Acquah had a team-best 11 tackles and two for a loss.
