Kean Football Building a Lasting Legacy With "Read Across America Day" At Wayside Elementary School

UNION, N.J. (3/31/26) - It's widely understood that meaningful change in society doesn't come solely from the gridiron, the pitch, the hardwood or the diamond.

In fact, even large demonstrations, carefully crafted speeches, or loud voices often fail to spark lasting growth and learning in the next generation.

Rather, it is the gentle actions- those rooted in genuineness and consistency that move the needle the farthest

For over two decades on Dr. Seuss day, the Kean football program has provided calm, simplicity, genuineness and consistency to Wayside Elementary in Ocean.

The Kean Football program completed their 20th visit to Wayside Elementary earlier this month, in celebration of 'Read Across America' day - the annual scholastic holiday that falls on the birthday of the famous children's author.

Excitement ran high throughout the Pre-K through fourth-grade school, as children in red and white Dr. Seuss hats sat crisscrossed applesauce, eager for story time to begin.

It's safe to say the players and coaches from Union delivered in a big way, as 13 representatives were able to make the 50-minute drive to Ocean Township on March 2nd. The group brought not only their athletic frames and football minds, but their inner-child that was ready for a fun book.

Read Across America Day

For the kids, a story-filled break from the routine seven-hour school day can often feel just as special as a field trip. There's an unexplainable aura when Student-Athletes like David Reyes and Christopher Lopez enter a classroom. For a handful, they might resemble that familiar image they have of an older sibling at home. For others, the confidence they carry - earned after graduating from a similar school - serves as proof that their own future is filled with possibility.

In moments like these, seeing jersey-clad young adults pick up a book with a smile becomes a reminder that learning, too, can be just as cool.

According to assistant coach David Galante, who was one of the 13 members taking part in the special day at Wayside Elementary, the team's participation in Dr. Seuss day goes beyond just that.

"What we did at Wayside for Read Across America Day wasn't just community service.  It's who we are.  It's one of the best days on the calendar for our team and their school!  For over 20 years, this program has shown up—not for recognition, not for credit—but to serve. That's legacy. That's the standard."

Wayside Elementary's school theme seamlessly aligns with the Kean football program's attitude for more than 20 years - never give up. In addition, seeing the genuine joy and attentiveness that the children portrayed shows that Kean football players can make an impact greater than gameday hoo-rahs, big hits, & touchdowns.

"And understand this— Impact isn't always loud. Sometimes it's sitting in a chair, reading a book, and showing a young kid what's possible.  That's bigger than football. That's purpose.  That's 'never giving up.' - which aligns greatly with our program and the core values we believe in."

With perseverance, togetherness, and service at the core of what Kean football represents, it's no surprise the program continues to show up for a cause that allows those values to be live out consistently.

"We talk all the time about brotherhood, accountability, and serving something bigger than ourselves… That day—we lived it.
And being part of the 20th year? That means legacy."
