Union, N.J. (4/11/26) – The Kean University baseball team split in Saturday action against William Paterson University.
William Paterson 8, Kean 3 (Game One)
The Pioneers quickly took a 3-0 lead as the first two batters of the contest reached on singles after just a combined five pitches. Matt Caruso took the first pitch he saw to dead center and made it 3-0. WP collected three more singles in the inning but Kean was able to get out of more trouble with a foul out and double play.
William Paterson added two more in the second, working the bases loaded with two hits and a walk. A bases loaded walk and a sac fly pushed the score to 5-0 after two.
Things settled down after for a few innings before the Pioneers added two in the sixth, recording another three singles.
Kean got on the board in the sixth, plating three runs with two outs. Jude Clough reached on an error and Tyler Stone reached after being hit. Cole McGourty erased the shutout with an RBI single and Dan Reistle and JT Abrusci registered RBI singles of their own.
William Paterson got one back in the seventh to round out the scoring, taking advantage of two walks sandwiched around two outs. Sean Lauterhahn came through with an RBI single.
Rob Nathan tossed a complete game allowing just five hits and striking out nine.
Kean 3, William Paterson 1 (Game Two)
William Paterson scored their only run of the nightcap in the top of the third. Devin Daproza singled with one out and moved to second on a groundout for out number two. Matt Caruso then singled up the middle for a 1-0 advantage.
Kean tied the game at one-all in the fourth as Michael Simone and Clough singled and walked respectively to get aboard with one out. Later with two outs, McGourty came through with a single to knot things up.
The Cougars took the lead in the seventh when McGourty led off with a single. Brett Hilsheimer later walked and Nick Sellari recorded an RBI single.
Clough added insurance in the eighth with a solo homer to led off the frame.
Connor Ramsey earned the win, tossing eight and two thirds innings. He allowed six hits, five singles and one run. He walked two and struck out five. Jason Basilicata earned the save facing one batter in the ninth. With runners on first and second and two outs, Christian Peluso grounded a ball to the right side that hit Angel Colon ending the game.
Offensively McGourty was 3-for-4.
Kean travels to Rutgers-Newark on Thursday.
