Union, N.J. (9/5/26) – SUNY Morrisville scored a late fourth quarter touchdown to edge the Kean University football team, 33-30 in the season opener for both.
The Cougars struck first in their second possession with good field position thanks to a Tre Allen interception. Reem Corey used a two-yard dash into the endzone to put Kean ahead 7-0 with about five minutes to go in the first.
The Mustangs used a huge 82 yard completion from Chaunsey Gilbert on their first drive of the second quarter to set up inside in the red zone. Jalyn Jacques put the Mustangs on the board with a seven-yard scamper but the ensuing extra point hit the uprights to help Kean remain in the lead.
That advantage was short lived as Mason Ondreyko caught the first pass of the Mustangs next possession for 78 yards and a 13-7 lead.
The teams continued to trade points as Kean connected on their next possession, capped with a 28-yard reception from Jason Marasciulo to retake the lead, 14-13.
Morrisville countered and used a 72-yard drive, finished by a 24-yard reception from Larry German to regain the advantage, 20-14.
Kean needed just two plays to answer back as Ty Kline found Aly Marzouk on a 56-yard catch (21-20).
The Cougars used their first possession of the third quarter to add to the lead as Marzouk recorded his second TD of the afternoon, this time an 11-yard reception.
The Mustangs took advantage of a specials teams miscue deep in Kean territory and used two plays to gain the two yards and pull within two, 28-26. Morrisville tried for two and failed.
The Cougars defense put two points on the board later in the quarter as Noah Mammeri brought down Isaac Sylvain in the endzone for a safety.
The score would remain that way until late in the fourth quarter as Morrisville took advantage of a Cougar fumble and took almost four minutes off the clock while connecting for their final touchdown of the day, a two-yard dash from Sylvain.
Kline finished with 241 passing yards and three touchdowns while adding 86 yards on the ground.
Mammeri led the defense with nine tackles, a half sack and a breakup.
The Cougars remain home and will face Maritime College next Saturday.
