Union, N.J. (2/10/22) – The Kean University baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to rally past Widener University by the final of 6-5 in the season opener for both.
Daniel Chiusano (1-0) earned the win in relief after tossing three and a third innings of shutout ball allowing just one hit along the way.
Widener scored all their runs in their first at-bat. Bryce Fremgen and Justin Costanza each recorded RBI singles while three more came in on bases loaded walks and a hit-by-pitch.
The Cougars chipped away and scored two in the same frame. Michael Lapczynski was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded and Vince Mele lofted a sac fly. Kean scratched across single runs in the fourth and sixth with RBI groundouts from Conner DeForge and Gianni Marano.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth and a runner on first, Philip Mahlik worked a full count walk. Phil Marcantonio followed suit and loaded the bases. Timothy Huxen tied things up with the third walk of the inning and Lapczynski added one more walk to score the winning run.
Mahlik was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
