Union, N.J. (2/26/22) – Starter Collin Kiernan fanned 12 over seven innings of work to help the Kean University baseball team remain undefeated with a 7-1 win over Haverford College on Saturday afternoon.
Kiernan (2-0) tossed seven innings of shutout ball, scattering six singles along the way. Daniel Chiusano closed out the game and allowed just one unearned run and one single with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Cougars (7-0) jumped out on top with a four spot in their half of the second inning. Michael Lapczynski started off the frame with a single and heads up running allowed him to move all the way to third on a groundout. Dylan Beyer was up next and proceeded to walk and later steal second. The throw to thwart Beyer sailed into centerfield, allowing Lapczynski to score for the game's first run. Back-to-back walks to Michael Medvetz and Steve Petrosh loaded the bases and an RBI sacrifice from Caleb Rodriguez made it 2-0. With two outs, Kyle Adorno singled up the middle, driving in two for a 4-0 lead.
Kean added three more in the seventh inning. Beyer led off the inning on a play you don't see every day. Beyer tripled into the gap and was on third when the Fords thought he missed first base. Without time called or a return of the ball to the mound, they appealed to first base. Beyer took off for home and crossed the plate for the game's fifth run. Two more miscues in the inning allowed two more Kean runners to score for a 7-0 lead.
Haverford (0-1) broke up the shutout in the eighth inning as Zach Landry scored on an error after reaching on a walk.
Lapczynski was 2-for-3 with a run scored for Kean while Zach Buck was 2-for-4 for the Fords.
Kean returns to action on Sunday when they host SUNY Brockport at noon.
