The men's soccer program claimed the first team national championship in the history of Kean University athletics when it defeated Ohio Wesleyan University by a score of 3-1 on November 22, 1992.
After dropping a tight, 1-0 contest to eventual NJAC regular-season champion Rowan University in October, the Cougars did not lose again for the remainder of the season. Behind the scoring of junior Fred Guiran and Pascal Clerigo and the goalkeeping of senior Kevin East, the Cougars rode a 10-game unbeaten streak through the NCAA Tournament to finish the season at 18-6-1. Kean defeated Elizabethtown College, 1-0, to win the Metro Regional and land the team's first Final Four appearance since 1984.
Hosting the Final Four, Kean then defeated Rochester Institute of Technology by a 1-0 score to earn a spot in the national championship game against the Bishops. Two goals by Clerigo and a goal and an assist by Guiran supplied the winning margin for the Cougars. East, with his 10 saves, and the Kean defenders were able to snuff out an Ohio Wesleyan attack that had produced 76 goals in 1992.
Guiran, who scored five goals, was named the most valuable player of the Final Four. For the season, he netted a school-record 31 goals and 12 assists for 74 points. Clerigo, with his 16 goals and 13 assists, and Johnny Ariza, with 11 scores and six assists, also keyed a potent Kean offense that amassed a team-record 78 goals that year. East was named the Defensive M.V.P. of the Final Four to cap a career that saw him notch a team-record 29 shutouts. He allowed just 24 goals in 25 matches in 1992.
East was protected by a formidable group of defenders that included Dan Pepe, Joe Bajek, Chris Greczek and Tom Merse. Midfield was anchored by Nelson Silva, Joe Jarosiewicz, Terrance Watson and Goran Srejic.
Walter "Elvis" Cabezas, Mike Ossowski, Gonzalo Ruiz, Kevin Denver and Jermaine Keller all contributed off the bench.
