An outstanding all-around basketball player at Newark State College (now Kean University), George Gilcrest was a proficient scorer, rebounder and shot blocker from 1966 through 1970.
Gilcrest finished his prolific career among the all-time top 10 scorers in school history. Falling just eight points short of the magic 1,000-point mark, he snared 663 rebounds as well. As a senior and team captain, he netted 345 points for a 14.1 per game average, shooting a team-high 45.7 percent from the floor. The defensive force also led his squad with 56 blocked shots.
As a junior, Gilcrest notched 218 points and averaged 7.4 rebounds per game. He was the recipient of the Nu Delta Pi Award for athletics in 1969-1970.
Gilcrest earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history/teacher education in 1970.
