Kean University

An athletic "jack-of-all-trades" during his four years at Newark State College (now Kean University), Archie Chiles excelled in such diverse activities as bowling, deck tennis and fencing. He is best known, however, for his exploits on the basketball court.

A three-year starter, from 1956 through 1959, Chiles enjoyed his finest campaign during his senior year, when his squad posted a 14-7 record, tying for the regular season championship of the New Jersey State College Athletic Conference with Glassboro State College (now Rowan University). He netted 254 of his career total of 917 points that season, playing alongside teammates and current fellow Hall of Famers Eugene Campbell, Jack Mott, John Joseph Kaufman and Arthur Salley.

A 6'2" forward, Chiles once pulled down 29 rebounds in one game. He finished among the team scoring and rebounding leaders all three seasons. 

Chiles was also very active on campus as a member of the student council, class treasurer, two-time class vice president, chairman of the prom committee and a member of the athletic committee.

Chiles received a Bachelor of Arts degree in junior high education in 1958.
