A star for the Newark State College (now Kean University) basketball team from 1957 through 1961, Arthur Salley became just the fifth player in the program's history to record 1,000 points during his career when he surpassed the mark in his senior year.
An All-New Jersey State College Athletic Conference (NJSCAC) selection that 1960-1961 season, Salley led the club in scoring with 349 points, a 15.9 points per game average. He captained that team and received the McKenna Award as the Most Valuable Player. In addition, he was nominated as a NAIA All-American.
Salley was also an integral part of the 1958-1959 team that posted a 14-7 mark, tying Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) for the NJSCAC regular season title. He was fourth on the squad with 211 points, a 10.6 ppg average. That club also featured fellow Hall of Famers Archie Chiles, Eugene Campbell, John Joseph Kaufman and Jack Mott.
Following his graduation, Salley served one season as an assistant coach under Bill LaRusso in 1961-1962.
Salley earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history/teacher education in 1961.
