A three-year soccer star at Kean, Richard Searchwell established a host of scoring records from 1979 through 1981 en route to receiving first team All-New Jersey Athletic Conference honors in each of those seasons.

Searchwell led the Squires (now Cougars) in scoring for all three of his seasons, and his 12 goals and four assists in 1981 led the conference.
For his career, Searchwell notched 30 goals and 13 assists and tied the club record by netting seven goals in a 1981 game against Jersey City State College (now New Jersey City University). In addition, his 15 total points in that contest represented the second-highest single game sum in the program's history.

Searchwell was lauded as a first team All-State pick in 1980 and 1981 and named to the All-Region squad in 1980. The Squires fought to a 27-18-5 record over his career, with the 1980 team posting a 12-4-2 mark and earning their initial appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Searchwell bypassed his senior year to play professional soccer in Greece before returning to complete his degree.

Searchwell earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in recreation administration from Kean in 1985.
