One of the more distinguished student-athletes at Kean in the late 1970s, James "Buck" Buchanan excelled in both football and lacrosse for the Squires.
A four-year starter for the football team, the linebacker capped a stellar career in 1980, receiving first-team All-New Jersey State College Athletic Conference and All-Eastern College Athletic Conference honors after leading the squad in tackles on his way to copping the Most Valuable Player award. He also led the team in tackles as a junior, earning an honorable mention All-Conference nod.
Buchanan captained the lacrosse team in 1980 and 1981, garnering first team All-Knickerbocker Conference accolades along the way. The midfielder helped the squad to the conference title in 1980.
The recipient of the 1980 D'Angola Award, presented annually to Kean's outstanding male and female athlete, Buchanan has also served as vice president of the Andrew Warner Hoffman Memorial Fund, which presents an annual scholarship to a Kean athlete.
Buchanan earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Kean in management science in 1981.
