Hall of Fame
The first star quarterback in the Kean football program, Michael Shern was a four-year letter winner for the Squires (now Cougars) from 1971 through 1974.
As a senior, Shern led the squad to an 8-2 mark in 1974, a season standard for wins that stood until 1987. When he left Kean, Shern held team records for passing yards in a career (2,360), season (1,311) and game (288); touchdown passes in a career (23), season (15) and game (three); passes completed in a career (164), season (81) and in a game (20); and passes attempted in a career (356), season (161) and game (38).
As a freshman, Shern starred for the defense in addition to his backup quarterback duties.
Shern was an outstanding baseball player as well, and started from 1972 through 1974. The team captain as a junior and senior, Shern was a superb defensive infielder, whether manning shortstop, third base or first base. He was an honorable mention All-New Jersey State College Athletic Conference pick in 1972 and was selected to appear in the 1974 edition of Outstanding College Athletes of America.
Shern earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education from Kean in 1975.
