A standout goalkeeper who helped carry the Cougars to three straight postseason appearances, Jean Grossman was also a pioneer in the sport, being a charter member of the first NCAA Division III women's soccer program in the state of New Jersey. Her defensive prowess helped the program become an immediate success competing against the established programs in the region. She started on Kean's inaugural club team that posted a 2-6 record in 1983.

Grossman captained and was named to the All-State teams in 1985 and 1986, her junior and senior seasons. With her in net, Kean compiled a 32-14-2 record, earning two ECAC playoff bids as well as the school's first NCAA playoff berth.

Grossman's 177 saves in 1986 stood as the Kean single-season mark for nine seasons, and the nine shutouts she posted that season tie her second best in Cougar history. For her exploits, Grossman was honored as the team's Most Valuable Player as a senior and as their Defensive Most Valuable Player as a junior.

Grossman earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Kean in 1987 after serving as the Cougars' assistant women's soccer coach for one season.
